Are molluscum common in
children?
Yes.
When it comes to molluscum
children are typically the most frequently
infected. There are three main groups of individuals who
present with molluscum contagiosum. They are:
- Children
- Sexually active adults
- Those who are immunocompromised (those undergoing
chemotherapy, transplant patients and those with HIV)
Children are likely to be the most common group affected
because their young age and developing immunity is less likley
to have been exposed to the molluscum virus. As a result,
when they common into contact with the virus it creates the
classic molluscum bumps and may continue to spread until it is
either treated or the body forms its immune response on its
own.
As you will learn in our section on molluscum treatment, there are
many ways that this virus may be successfully treated. We
urge you to explore more throughout the site.
